White, SDSU edge Gonzaga in CBE Classic

Nov 17, 2010 - 7:05 AM Spokane, WA (Sports Network) - Billy White scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds, as the 25th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs took down the 11th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, 79-76, as part of the CBE Classic from the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Kawhi Leonard added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Aztecs (2-0), who are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2007-08 season. James Rahon finished with 12 points in the victory.

Steven Gray scored a career-high 35 points and dished out five assists for the Bulldogs (2-1), who had won their first two games this season with ease, cruising past Southern (117-72) and IUPUI (86-56). Robert Sacre added 13 points and 11 boards in the loss.

Gonzaga fell to 77-5 at McCarthey Athletic Center.

The Aztecs scored the first six points of the game to take an early lead. San Diego State built on that margin later in the half when Leonard made a jumper for a 30-20 edge with under 6 1/2 minutes remaining.

The score was 42-37 at the break. Gonzaga, though, scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 44-42 lead on Elias Harris' three-point play.

The Aztecs fought back and held a 59-57 edge before White made a layup and three-pointer to extend San Diego State's margin to 64-57 with 11:11 to go.

Gray made two free throws and a layup to get the Bulldogs within two, 69-67, with under 5 1/2 minutes to play.

White responded with a pair of layups in front of Leonard's jumper for a 75-67 lead with four minutes left.

Gonzaga ripped off seven straight points moments later to make things interesting. Gray had six points during the burst, including a layup to cut the gap to 77-76 with 23.6 seconds to go.

Leonard made it a three-point game with a pair of free throws at the other end. Gray turned the ball over at the opposite end, but Chase Tapley missed a free throw.

Gonzaga got the rebound and raced down the court for a last-second shot. However, Gray's halfcourt shot was off the mark.

Game Notes

The Aztecs shot 50.8 percent from the field, while Gonzaga made 48.1 percent of its shots...These two schools met for just the second time, with Gonzaga claiming a 72-69 decision back in 1959.
