Georgia upsets No. 20 Mississippi State in OT
Feb 11, 2012 - 11:00 PM Starkville, MS (Sports Network) - Gerald Robinson netted eight of his 13 points in overtime and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 20 points and eight rebounds as Georgia upset No. 20 Mississippi State, 70-68.Dee Bost had a chance to win it for Mississippi State in the extra session, but his leaning three-pointer from the right wing was short of the rim as time expired.
Donte Williams and Dustin Ware donated 11 points apiece for Georgia (12-12, 3-7 SEC), which has won three consecutive games. The visitors made 11-of-26 shots from beyond the arc and pulled down 15 offensive rebounds.
"They (Georgia) are really playing well, and they're playing together, playing complete basketball. I'm truly proud of them. This is a good team we beat. We beat a terrific basketball team, a team we had great respect for before we came here. So, to leave here with a win, it's very gratifying," Geogia head coach Mark Fox said.
Bost finished with 21 points for Mississippi State (19-6, 6-4), which had its 13-game home winning streak snapped. Renardo Sidney recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
"They made shots today, 11 three-pointers, but no where in that game did I feel we got our emotion or energy to where it needed to be," Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury said.
Bost's three-point play gave Mississippi State a 58-55 advantage with 1:38 to play in regulation, but Donte Williams' dunk at the other end cut the margin to one with 1:28 left.
After Sidney made 1-of-2 from the line, Robinson's driving layup at the other end tied the contest at 59 with 28 seconds to go. Jalen Steele's three-pointer from the right wing with two seconds left was off the mark.
Robinson began overtime with a nifty left-handed reverse, but a pair of free throws by Rodney Hood and Arnett Moultrie's jump hook in the paint gave Mississippi State a 63-61 advantage with 2:32 to go in overtime.
Robinson, though, countered with a pair of free throws and dunk in transition following a steal for a 65-63 Georgia lead.
After Steele got a friendly roll on a trey, Caldwell-Pope answered with a step-back three-pointer from the right wing, giving Georgia a 68-66 advantage with 1:08 to play.
Sidney missed a jumper at the other end and Robinson made a pair of foul shots to make it a two-possession game with 24 seconds left.
Moultrie's dunk made it a two-point contest and Robinson gave the hosts hope after misfiring on the front end of a 1-and-1 with nine seconds to play.
But Bost's trey at the buzzer was well short and Georgia escaped with its first victory in Starkville since 2002.
Georgia began 1-of-9 from the floor and found itself down 16-9 midway through the opening half after Steele's trey. But the visitors hit on 10 of their next 12 shots to take a 29-27 lead with 4:10 to go in the stanza.
Mississippi State nailed 6-of-12 shots from beyond the arc in the first half and took a 34-31 advantage into the locker room. Caldwell-Pope had 14 first- half points to pace Georgia.
