Robinson, No. 3 Kansas beat Texas by 10

Mar 4, 2012 - 6:32 AM Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Thomas Robinson scored 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to give No. 3 Kansas a 73-63 victory over Texas at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday.

Tyshawn Taylor netted 22 while Elijah Johnson and Jeff Withey both scored nine for the Jayhawks (26-5, 16-2 Big 12), who have won eight straight overall and 11 in a row at home.

"We won the league and the league is more important than the postseason tournament, I don't care what anybody says," remarked Kansas head coach Bill Self after the game. "But we might as well go validate it and our guys are excited to play."

Kansas secured a share of the Big 12 crown with last Saturday's overtime win over Missouri, then earned its fourth straight outright conference title with a victory at Oklahoma State on Monday.

J'Covan Brown led all scorers with 33 points for Texas (19-12, 9-9), which was looking for a signature win to bolster its NCAA resume. Clint Chapman added 10 points and seven rebounds and Julien Lewis scored eight off the bench.

Taylor's jumper with 9:11 left made it a 16-12 Kansas lead, but the Jayhawks would not manage another field goal until Taylor buried another jumper with 2:36 left.

However, the Longhorns were just as cold, as they went five-plus minutes without a field goal until Chapman's tip in with one second left in the half cut the deficit to 26-21 going into the locker room.

Brown scored the first 15 points of the second half for Texas, but without any other production, Kansas slowly began to pull away.

"We have to step up on defense," said Brown about his team's second half effort. "We can't let teams shoot 63 percent, or whatever they shot, to end the game. We have to find a way to limit teams."

Leading by four, Taylor made a jumper, followed by a three-pointer from Conner Teahan. Robinson followed with 10 straight for his club, and Johnson buried a triple to press the lead to 48-36 with 11:14 left in the game.

Johnson nailed another three-pointer less than four minutes later to press the lead to 15, as Texas was unable to cut the lead to single digits down the stretch, allowing the Jayhawks to hold on for the victory going away.
