Turner leads defensive Aggies past Bearkats

Dec 8, 2011 - 4:59 AM College Station, TX (Sports Network) - Ray Turner posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 22 Texas A&M shut down Sam Houston State, 64-37.

Elston Turner and David Loubeau added 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Aggies (7-1), who have held their last four opponents under 45 points.

Demarcus Gatlin was the lone Bearkat (3-6) in double figures with 13 points.

The rout started early, with Elston Turner scoring eight points on a game- opening 14-2 run.

"I definitely think we started off the game pretty well. We came out and hit them in the mouth," Ray Turner said.

A seven-point Aggies spurt a little later pushed the margin to 23-6 near the midway point, and the hosts coasted into the break holding a 31-17 cushion.

"The way we are depth-wise, you can't get in a hole against a good team like that," SHSU head coach Jason Hooten said.

Jordan Green sparked a 9-0 run for Texas A&M early in the second half, as his layup off a turnover five minutes in doubled up the Bearkats, 44-22.

Sam Houston State had no answer, as it wound up shooting just 25 percent from the field and 4-for-24 from three-point range.
