Virginia routs Maryland

Feb 19, 2012 - 12:30 AM Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Mike Scott scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds and Virginia used a huge second half to put away Maryland, 71-44, on Saturday.

Malcolm Brogdon finished with 14 points on 5-of-6 from the floor and Sammy Zeglinski added 11 points for the Cavaliers (20-6, 7-5 ACC), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

"Mike is having a terrific year. He is showing his versatility," Virginia head coach Tony Bennett said. "To see the success that he is having as a player is exciting because he is doing things as a marked man. He has been an encouragement and I'm proud of him. I really am."

Terrell Stoglin led the Terrapins (15-11, 5-7) with 14 points and Nick Faust netted 13 points. Ashton Pankey added eight rebounds and four points for Maryland, which failed to carry over momentum from an 81-65 win over Boston College on Thursday.

With the game tied 31-all at the break, Virginia pulled away for good with a 16-2 run to take a comfortable 47-33 advantage, capped by a Joe Harris jumper with 12:26 to go. Scott scored seven points during the run

The Cavaliers never let Maryland back in the game and a trey by Brogdon gave UVA a 20-point lead with five minutes to play.

Virginia outscored the Terps 40-13 in the second half and ended the game shooting 48.1 percent, while holding Maryland to just 26.9 percent from the floor.

Virginia scored the first seven points of the game, but Maryland came back with the next six to pull within one with 15:47 to play in the opening half.

The Cavaliers then used a 15-7 burst to extend their lead to 22-13 with six minutes to go, but Maryland responded with a 13-2 flurry to take its first lead of the game, 26-24 with 3:43 left in the opening half.

Jontel Evans connected on a jumper with 1:14 left in the half to put Virginia up 31-28, but Faust answered with a trey in the closing seconds to tie it at 31 at halftime.

"I thought they executed, they defended their tails off, and they played with more toughness," Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said. "They were clearly the team that wanted it more today; they are coming out of three of four losses and it showed. We had a two-point lead in the second half and then it was all them, total domination."

Despite the loss, the Terrapins hold a 106-70 series advantage...The Cavaliers connected on 6-of-10 tries from three-point range, while Maryland was 7-of-19 from beyond the arc...Virginia turned 15 Maryland turnovers into 22 points...The Cavaliers got 22 points from their reserves, while Maryland got 11 points from its bench...Virginia outrebounded Maryland, 36-35.
