No. 15 Michigan upsets Memphis in Maui

Nov 22, 2011 - 2:59 AM Maui, HI (Sports Network) - Tim Hardaway, Jr. notched a game-high 21 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists, as No. 15 Michigan took down No. 8 Memphis, 73-61, at the Maui Invitational.

Trey Burke posted 14 points for the Wolverines (4-0), who advanced to take on No. 6 Duke on Tuesday.

Charles Carmouche poured in 14 points with four rebounds for the Tigers (1-1), who will face Tennessee in the losers bracket on Tuesday. Will Barton added nine points in defeat.

The Wolverines pulled away for good by taking control in the middle portion of the second half. After Barton sank a trey to get Memphis within 46-41, Michigan embarked on a 15-6 run to create a 14-point margin.

Burke got the run started with an easy deuce, and Hardaway highlighted the run with six points, including the final four of the clip.

"When they went on that run, the game definitely changed," said Barton. "We stopped attacking the basket. We started settling for jump shots. We didn't do a good job in transition defense, stopping the ball when they swung in transition, closing out guys and calling out misses. That's when they hurt us the most."

A Carmouche layup with 4:11 to play brought the Tigers' deficit below double digits, but two Hardaway free throws and a three-pointer from Evan Smotrycz pushed the margin back up to 14 less than a minute later.

"They made a little run there when our tough shots stopped falling," said Michigan head coach John Beilein. "We got it together and got back with it."

Michigan raced out to a 10-4 lead in the first three-plus minutes, only to see Memphis close the gap to 20-19 on a Chris Crawford layup less than eight minutes in.

The Tigers forged ahead by a 31-27 count after a pair of free throws by Antonio Barton to cap a 10-2 burst, but the Wolverines responded with the final 10 points to take a 37-31 edge to the break.

Game Notes

Michigan shot 60 percent in the first half and ended with 54-percent efficiency...Smotrycz recorded seven points and a game-high eight rebounds...Crawford, Tarik Black, Wesley Witherspoon and Joe Jackson all had seven points for Memphis.
