Hardaway, No. 16 Michigan top No. 18 Wisconsin

Jan 9, 2012 - 3:14 AM Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Tim Hardaway Jr. finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 16 Michigan used a strong defensive effort to top 18th- ranked Wisconsin, 59-41, at the Crisler Center.

Trey Burke added 14 points for the Wolverines (13-3, 3-1 Big Ten), who rebounded from Thursday's two-point setback at Indiana. They also snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Badgers.

"They like to play that slow-paced game, and we just tried to do a great job on the offensive end to milk the clock a little bit, just try to find the good shot," Hardaway said. "We felt like at Indiana, we really rushed, forced plays."

Wisconsin won the most recent matchup, on February 23 of last season, when Josh Gasser drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer.

But the Badgers (12-5, 1-3) were never in position to pull out another surprise victory, totaling just 19 points in the first half and going scoreless for nearly five minutes at the start of the second period.

Jordan Taylor, Wisconsin's leading scorer, netted 12 points but made just 5- of-15 shots in the team's third consecutive loss.

The teams began the game with back-to-back runs. Michigan held a 10-2 lead after Hardaway made two free throws, and Wisconsin countered with the next 10 points, including threes from Mike Bruesewitz and Ben Brust.

The Badgers were still in front with nine minutes left in the half, when a Taylor jumper gave them a 14-13 edge.

But Wisconsin missed eight of its next nine shots and turned the ball over twice, allowing Michigan to go on a 10-2 run. Hardaway and Evan Smotrycz sank back-to-back threes to start the burst, which Burke ended with consecutive jumpers.

The Wolverines went into the break with a 25-19 advantage, then pushed it to double digits by beginning the second half with a 7-0 rally.

Wisconsin never got back in the game because of its ineffective offense. After Traevon Jackson's trey pulled the Badgers within 36-26 with just under 12 minutes left, Hardaway countered with a layup. Burke scored the next five, and the Wolverines cruised from there.

Michigan improved to 10-0 at home this season, and has won 11 in a row in Ann Arbor...Ryan Evans pulled down 10 rebounds for Wisconsin...Zack Novak netted 12 points for Michigan, while Jordan Morgan had a game-best 11 boards -- including five offensive rebounds...The Badgers made just 2-of-5 free throws.
