Kentucky rolls past Iowa State

Mar 18, 2012 - 6:11 AM Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Marquis Teague poured in 24 points and dished out seven assists, and Kentucky used a big run in the second half to beat Iowa State, 87-71, to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Darius Miller scored 19 and Doron Lamb 16 for the top-seeded Wildcats (34-2), who will face No. 4 seed Indiana. The Hoosiers escaped with a 63-61 win over No. 12 seed VCU Saturday night. Kentucky's South Regional semifinal matchup with Indiana is set for Friday night at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

The Hoosiers handed Kentucky its first loss of the season in dramatic fashion on Dec. 10 when Christian Watford nailed a three-pointer as time expired to give Indiana a stunning 73-72 victory.

Anthony Davis played a key role with 15 points and 12 rebounds for Kentucky, which went 16-of-25 from the field in the second half.

Royce White had 23 points and nine rebounds for the eighth-seeded Cyclones (23-11), who knocked off defending champion Connecticut on Thursday. Chris Allen added 16 points and Scott Christopherson tallied 15 in defeat.

Christopherson's layup tied it at 42 with 16:28 left, but Terrence Jones then drove the left baseline for the go-ahead slam. That started a 20-2 run for Kentucky.

After Christopherson missed a jumper, Miller sank a shot from the right wing and Davis jammed on an alley-oop to set the pro-Wildcat crowd into a frenzy. Iowa State continued to falter, and the Wildcats, who went 6-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half, got a three from Miller for a 60-44 margin inside 11 minutes left. Miller's two free throws capped the rally for a 62-44 difference with 10:24 to go.

"I was just trying to push the ball in transition and take whatever play they gave me," Teague said. "They gave me the layup a lot of times tonight. Also, I was able to kick out to open players like Doron, Darius, and they knocked down a lot of shots."

Kentucky led by as many as 24 down the stretch.

"Take your hats off to them," Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. "They hit tough shots, they hit shots with the shot clock running down. They were very good in transition I thought."

Teague's jumper nine minutes into the game boosted the Wildcats to a 23-11 lead and they carried a 38-27 advantage into the locker room.

Lamb went 5-of-7 from three-point range, part of a 10-of-20 effort for the Wildcats. Conversely, the Cyclones hit on 3-of-22 from beyond the arc...Kentucky has won all three meetings between the two schools, including a 106-98 victory against the Cyclones in the 1992 NCAA Tournament...Kentucky is 57-9 all-time against schools comprising the Big 12 conference...The last time Kentucky played Indiana in the NCAA Tournament was in 1983 when the Wildcats won, 64-59, in 1983 in a regional semifinal.
