Georgia Tech beats Miami-Florida on late basket

A distributor for most of the game, Georges-Hunt penetrated to the basket, lofted a floater that hit the back rim, but tipped in his own miss at the buzzer, as the Yellow Jackets stunned No. 6 Miami-Floria, 71-69.

Georges-Hunt's second field goal of the game denied Miami its first outright ACC championship, at least for now. The Hurricanes (23-6, 14-3) get another chance to win the league crown on Saturday against Clemson. Miami will enter that contest losers in three of its last four games.

Chris Bolden scored a career-high 21 points, Daniel Miller battled the Hurricanes big men and held his own with 17 points and five rebounds, while Robert Carter added 12 points. Georges-Hunt dished out six assists and grabbed six boards, but it was his second field goal of the game that gave the Yellow Jackets (16-13, 6-11) their first win over a top-25 opponent under head coach Brian Gregory.

The Yellow Jackets continued to hang close in the second half, slicing a 13- point deficit to seven and contesting the Hurricanes on every possession. They drew within 60-56 after Bolden banked in a three-pointer from the right wing with just over nine minutes on the clock.

Carter's acrobatic layup brought the visitors within three then Bolden connected from long range to square the contest at 65-65 with about five minutes to go. Then, in an exhilarating sequence, Solomon Poole picked Durand Scott's pocket, starting a fastbreak finished by Bolden after a ball fake and left-handed finger roll for a 67-66 Tech lead.

Miami regained its lead at 69-67 on Scott's jumper, but Miller's layup off a defensive lapse again knotted the bout nearing the two-minute mark. Scott finished with 17 points and five rebounds on the night, second only to Kenny Kadji's 18 points and 11 boards.

Bolden came up empty and Scott committed another turnover, setting up Georges- Hunt's game-winning follow-up.

The Yellow Jackets hung tough early, actually taking a 10-9 lead on Bolden's trey nearly three minutes in. Miami regained its footing with 14 straight points moments later, with two layups from Julian Gamble and Shane Larkin opening a 20-14 lead. Larkin added a short jumper and dished off to Kadji for a three-pointer and a 25-14 advantage at the halfway point.

Georgia Tech got as close as seven at one point, but Miami moved back in front 43-32 by halftime thanks to Trey McKinney Jones' trey with four seconds remaining.

Larkin fished with 12 points and seven assists, but took just seven shots in the loss ... Georgia Tech made 51.7 percent of its shots, but attempted just six free throws ... Miami made 48 percent from the floor ... The Hurricanes still lead the all-time series, 10-7 ... Georgia Tech handed Miami its first loss in 14 games at the BankUnited Center.
