Hoosiers keep Penn State winless in Big Ten

Jan 24, 2013 - 3:44 AM Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) - Victor Oladipo scored 19 points, and seventh-ranked Indiana pounded Penn State, 72-49, at Assembly Hall.

Yogi Ferrell added 15 points and Will Sheehey scored 12 for the Hoosiers (17-2, 5-1 Big Ten), who have won two in a row since a 64-59 home loss to Wisconsin last Tuesday.

The Hoosiers won despite a career-low two points for Cody Zeller, who missed all four of his shots from the field.

"Cody did a lot of other things to impact the game and that's why he's such a great player," Oladipo said. "He might have a slow night today, but he played tremendous defense. He still had 10 deflections and rebounded the ball. He might be having a slow night on offense, but he's doing what it takes to win. Sure we've got to step it up a little bit, but when he plays like that we've just got to play together."

D.J. Newbill had 18 points and Jermaine Marshall added 12 for Penn State (8-11, 0-7), which suffered its seventh straight loss. The Nittany Lions fell to 0-4 in true road games this season. They have lost 14 in a row on the road since a 62-54 victory at Boston College on Nov. 30, 2011.

The Penn State perimeter defense couldn't stop the Hoosiers, who went 11-of-20 from beyond the 3-point arc.

"I didn't like our match-ups," Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said. "They are a very talented group and as a coach you have to do everything you can to try to help your team be successful. I felt like we mixed it up a lot, playing a lot of zone, but a little man and disguised the zone. We did a lot of different things and for a while it worked, but then talent takes over and they started making threes. Eleven threes is just too many because we are not a great three point shooting team."

Ferrell sank a 3-pointer and a jumper to cap a game-opening 7-0 burst. A layup from Jon Graham brought the Nittany Lions within seven points with 4 1/2 minutes left.

The Hoosiers surged with an ensuing 20-5 burst that lasted into the early stages of the second half. After holding a 33-19 lead at the break, Ferrell and Jordan Hulls opened the second half with consecutive 3-pointers. Oladipo's layup culminated the push for a 41-19 margin only a minute into the second half.

Oladipo's 3-pointer with under 14 minutes left created a 24-point difference, and the Hoosiers coasted to their fifth straight win over Penn State, which finished at 33 percent from the field.
