No. 4 Michigan bounces back by besting Penn State

Feb 17, 2013 - 11:17 PM Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - All it took for Michigan to end a two-game skid was to play a team with a longer losing streak.

But it sure wasn't easy.

Trey Burke scored 29 points and Glenn Robinson III added 21 with 10 rebounds, as the fourth-ranked Wolverines kept Penn State winless in Big Ten play with a 79-71 victory at the Crisler Center.

Nik Stauskas chipped in 18 points for Michigan (22-4, 9-4 Big Ten), which had lost three of its last four and was coming off a humbling 75-52 loss at Michigan State on Tuesday.

"Michigan State was a struggle," Robinson said. "This was a great game for us and we got what we were looking for."

Jermaine Marshall and Sasa Borovnjak each scored 17 points for the Nittany Lions (8-17, 0-13), who led for most of the first half Sunday and never trailed by double digits. Penn State still came up short and has lost 13 straight games since an 84-74 win over Duquesne on Dec. 29.

The Wolverines scored the final four points of the first half to square it at 32-32, then opened the second half with the first six points. A dunk by Robinson gave Michigan its first lead since the first three minutes of the opening half and four straight points by Stauskas provided the Wolverines with a 38-32 advantage.

Penn State managed to tie it with six consecutive points on a three-point play by D.J. Newbill and a three from Brandon Taylor, but a triple from Stauskas ignited a 10-2 Michigan run. Burke also hit from beyond the arc during the surge, which Robinson capped with a dunk for a 48-40 cushion.

The Wolverines led by as many as nine a few moments later, but Penn State pulled to within one at 55-54 on a bucket by Ross Travis with just over nine minutes remaining. However, threes by Stauskas and Tim Hardaway Jr. fueled another 10-2 burst that gave Michigan a 65-56 lead with 6:40 to play.

Penn State never let Michigan pull away, but also never got closer than six the rest of the way.

Newbill and Travis each scored 11 points for the Nittany Lions, who have lost five straight against the Wolverines and fell to 2-17 in Ann Arbor.

Penn State took command early with a 12-1 run to open a 17-9 lead. Michigan went more than seven minutes without a field goal before a three by Burke trimmed the deficit to 18-14.

The Wolverines finally tied it in the final minute of the half when Burke's tough runner made it 32-32 and the teams went to the break that way when Hardaway missed from well beyond the arc at the buzzer.

Hardaway finished with eight points ... Only six players reached the scoring column for each team ... Travis had 10 rebounds for Penn State, which held a 35-29 edge on the boards ... Each team was 6-of-18 from beyond the arc, but the Wolverines outscored the Nittany Lions at the free throw line, 27-15 ... Penn State committed 13 turnovers to six for Michigan ... The Wolverines improved to 15-0 at home this season and have won 30 of their last 31 games at the Crisler Center.
