Indiana State topples No. 16 Creighton

Feb 7, 2013 - 4:46 AM Terre Haute, IN (Sports Network) - Jake Odum scored a game-high 22 points and dished out five assists to lead Indiana State to a 76-57 drubbing of 16th- ranked Creighton at Hulman Center.

Odum, who finished 7-of-10 from the field, has reached double digits in four straight games. Manny Arop finished with 13 points and seven rebounds and RJ Mahurin added 17 points for the Sycamores (15-8, 8-4 MVC), winners in three of their last four.

"I don't know if we could have played any better, we played awfully well on both ends of the floor, especially defensively" said Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing. "We were very prepared for everything they did, our mistakes were minimum and I think that we beat one of the top teams in the country."

Indiana State took down then 15th-ranked Wichita State on Jan. 29, but fell to Drake in overtime on Feb. 2.

Doug McDermott, the Bluejays' leading scorer, struggled from the field all night. The 2012 MVC Player of the Year converted on just 3-of-10 field goal attempts and finished with just eight points, his lowest scoring output since posting just five points on Nov. 14.

"We were half a step slow on the offensive end of the floor. On the defensive end we wanted to keep them out of the paint and off the free throw line and we didn't do either of those things," said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. "It was disappointing our guys weren't locked in and ready to play."

Will Artino led Creighton (20-4, 9-3) with 13 points while Gregory Echenique, Grant Gibbs and Nevin Johnson tallied eight points apiece in the setback.

Creighton took a 7-4 lead early in the first half, but Indiana State quickly took a 13-8 lead following Odum's jumper at the 13:01 mark.

A 13-4 burst from the Sycamores made it 26-18 with just over 5 1/2 minutes left in the half, and Indiana State led 35-24 at the break.

The Sycamores pushed their spread over 20 points when Mahurin's 3-pointer made it 48-27 with just over four minutes played in the second half and the lead grew to as many as 28 over the final stages of the game.
