Arizona takes control against Washington in second half
Feb 21, 2013 - 7:40 AM Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Solomon Hill scored 19 points and Mark Lyons added 14 as the 12th-ranked Arizona Wildcats defeated the Washington Huskies, 70-52, on Wednesday at McKale Center.Hill added six boards, two steals and block and Lyons shot 4-for-7 as Arizona (22-4, 10-4 Pac 12) used a strong second half to capture a second straight win on the heels of two consecutive losses.
"It's good to get a great win in from of your home crowd, a place where we've dropped two," Hill said. "It's something we want to change. We don't want to lose at home."
Nick Johnson finished with 12 points, while Kaleb Tarczewski and Brandon Ashley contributed 10 points to the victory.
Washington (14-13, 6-8) shot just 30.8 percent in suffering its eighth defeat in 10 games.
C.J Wilcox scored 15 and Abdul Gaddy poured in 12 for the Huskies, who dropped their fifth straight on the road and eighth in a row to a Top 25 opponent.
After a slow start, Arizona finally got rolling near the end of the first half.
The Wildcats began just 3-for-15 shooting through the first 11 1/2 minutes and trailed 13-8, but Lyons scored 10 straight points, making a pair of 3-pointers to put Arizona ahead 18-16.
Later, Hill followed his three-point play with a triple to help spark an 11-4 run to close out the half, giving Arizona a 33-25 edge at the break.
Washington's slow offensive game became nearly stagnant after coming out of the locker room, as the Huskies made just two shots from the field in the first seven-plus minutes of the second half, in which time the Wildcats blew the game open.
Using a 19-5 run, Arizona opened up a 52-30 advantage on Gabe York's triple. Johnson added nine straight points prior to York's make and the Wildcats never looked back from there.
The closest Washington came was 14 points the rest of the way.
"We don't play with a lack of pride, but in the second half, we played with a lack of pride," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said.
