UNC routs Chaminade in Maui Invitational 3rd-place game
Nov 22, 2012 - 4:44 AM Maui, HI (Sports Network) - James Michael McAdoo led a balanced attack with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and ninth-ranked North Carolina bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 112-70 rout of Chaminade in the third-place game of the Maui Invitational.Reggie Bullock and Leslie McDonald each scored 17, while Brice Johnson chipped in 16 for UNC (5-1), which lost to Butler Tuesday.
"Needless to say, it's a better feeling right now than we had last night," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said. "But last night's game had a great effect on how we played today. We were all extremely upset and extremely mad, however you want to describe it. But we really wanted to focus on today's game and have a different energy level. I think we did."
De'Andre Haskins poured in 22 points for the Silverswords (3-3), who also received 15 points from Bennie Murray and 10 from Lee Bailey. The Division II team shocked Texas in the opening round of the event before losing to Illinois on Tuesday.
A 3-pointer from Haskins boosted Chaminade to a 9-6 edge, but the Tar Heels netted the following 14 points. Bullock sank a trio of shots from beyond the arc during the spurt.
"When their big guys get out and run and their wings run lanes and they go right into several different sets out of transition, they're tough to guard," Chaminade coach Eric Bovaird said. "We had a hard time matching up. They got some early, quick looks at wide open threes and knocked them down."
P.J. Hairston's two free throws extended the margin to 34-16, and the lead reached 45-20 on McDonald's 3-ball with under seven minutes left.
The Tar Heels held a 62-33 advantage at the half.
