Calhoun, UConn rout DetroitNov 15, 2013 - 3:45 AM Storrs, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Omar Calhoun scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half Thursday and No. 19 Connecticut coasted to a 101-55 victory over Detroit in its first on-campus game of the season.
Niels Giffey scored all of his 15 points in the first half, Ryan Boatright had 12 and the Huskies (3-0) reached 100 points for the first time in more than four years with six scorers hitting double digits.
DeAndre Daniels added 11 points and Shabazz Napier and Tyler Olander both scored 10. Napier had eight rebounds and eight assists.
"This team is deep," said UConn coach Kevin Ollie. "We've got a lot of versatile basketball players. And we're sharing the basketball. ... It was a team-made victory, not a self-made victory."
Matthew Grant scored 15 points to lead the Titans (1-2) and Juwan Howard Jr. had 14, but just four in the second half.
The Huskies have won every opener at Gampel Pavilion since the building opened in 1990. They played their first two games against Maryland at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and against Yale at XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
Returning to campus, they put up triple digits for the first time since doing it in back-to-back games on March 12 and 19, 2009 -- in a six-overtime loss to Syracuse in the Big East Tournament and a win over Chattanooga to start the NCAA tournament.
They shot 57.4 percent from the floor in this one, including 62.5 percent in the second half after leading 48-26 at the break.
Napier's side-armed outlet pass from the baseline led to a Daniels dunk and Boatright followed with a layup in transition to give UConn a 64-35 lead less than five minutes into the second half.
The Huskies lead reached 40 on Terrence Samuel's layup with 11:26 left. Their biggest advantage was the final margin.
"It was a tough night for us," said Detroit coach Ray McCallum. "I guess the thing I can say is how great UConn played tonight. ... What you're seeing with them (is) a balanced team, with the great guard play making guys better, with their length, with their 3-point shooting."
The Titans were coming off a 106-51 win over Michigan-Dearborn on Monday after dropping their season-opener to South Alabama. They shot 30.4 percent in the game and had a six-point lead with 13:41 remaining in the first half.
Giffey hit two 3s and scored 10 points during a 13-3 run that gave the Huskies the lead for good.
The Huskies have started 3-0 in both seasons under Ollie ... UConn is 73-4 all-time against non-conference opponents in its on-campus arena ... The game was part of the 2K Sports Classic, which runs through Nov. 22. The Huskies host Boston University on Sunday and play Boston College next Thursday at Madison Square Garden ... Ollie is 9-1 in the month of November ... Detroit plays at James Madison next Tuesday.
