Wiggins, Parker both shine but Kansas tops Duke
Nov 13, 2013 - 7:43 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Wiggins and the fifth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks scored 15 of the game's final 19 points to beat the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils by a 94-83 margin in a battle between two of the winningest programs in college basketball. The much-anticipated showdown between Wiggins and Duke forward Jabari Parker highlighted the second game of the Champions Classic. Both players entered the season as the two top prospects in the nation.
"The hype was big," Wiggins said of the matchup against Parker. "I just tried to block it out because I know our names on the jersey don't say Parker and Wiggins, it says Kansas and Duke. At the end of the day, one team is going to win. It's not one player that's going to win, it's the whole team."
Wiggins ended with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Parker tallied 27 points and nine boards.
Perry Ellis had 24 points and nine rebounds for the Jayhawks (2-0), who went 27-of-35 from the foul line. Wayne Selden, Jr. and Frank Mason each added 15 points.
Amile Jefferson finished with 17 points for the Blue Devils (1-1), who fell to 7-3 all-time against Kansas. Rasheed Sulaimon and Rodney Hood tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Second-ranked Michigan State held off No. 1 Kentucky 78-74 in the first game of the Champions Classic.
Parker brought the crowd to its feet with a one-handed alley-oop slam in the first minute of the second half.
The game remained close until Kansas pulled away at the end. With the score tied at 79, the Jayhawks closed out the contest on a 15-4 run.
Selden's tip-in sparked the surge that included six points from Wiggins. Ahead by two, 83-81, Wiggins made a jumper. Ellis then stole the ball from Hood and passed to Wiggins for a slam. Wiggins added two more free throws with 45.1 seconds left to make it a 92-83 contest.
Kansas went 7-of-9 from the charity stripe during the burst.
After Duke jumped out to an 8-2 margin to start the game, the Jayhawks responded with an 11-2 spurt to go in front, but the rest of the first half was a close battle. Duke took a 42-40 edge into the locker room.
"I thought we played better than they did in the first half and we should have been up a little bit more," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "Then they played better than we did in the second half and when you have two good teams that's what happens."
Game Notes
Duke went 7-of-18 from beyond the arc and 16-of-28 from the foul line ... Quinn Cook had 10 points for the Blue Devils ... Kansas shot 56.1 percent from the field.
