UMass continues winning ways, downs Elon

Jan 19, 2014 - 2:43 AM Elon, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Cady Lalanne netted a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help No. 16 Massachusetts notch an 84-74 victory over Elon on Saturday at Alumni Gym.

Chaz Williams followed with 20 points and Maxie Esho scored 17 to go with seven boards off the bench for the Minutemen (16-1), who have won six straight games.

Lucas Troutman led Elon (10-9) with 19 points, while Sebastian Koch chipped in 18 points and six rebounds for the Phoenix, who had a three-game win streak halted.

UMass scored the game's first seven points, including five from Raphiael Putney, and never looked back en route to the wire-to-wire victory.

Koch's 3-pointer pulled Elon within 20-14 with just over 12 minutes left in the first half, but the Minutemen answered with a 9-1 swing to push the cushion to 29-15 with 8:08 remaining in the frame.

The visitors carried a 41-30 lead into halftime and held Elon at bay for much of the second half, never allowing the Phoenix to get closer than nine until Tanner Samson's trey trimmed the deficit to 64-56 with 7:09 remaining.

However, Williams went 7-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch and scored 14 of his 20 points over the final seven minutes to extinguish any thoughts of an Elon comeback.
