Kloof helps Bonnies knock off Minutemen

Jan 30, 2014 - 3:55 AM Olean, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Charlon Kloof posted 14 points, five rebounds and four assists to help St. Bonaventure knock off 21st-ranked Massachusetts, 78-65, at the Reilly Center.

Youssou Ndoye and Dion Wright both scored 12 points for the Bonnies (13-8, 3-4 A-10), who registered their first win over a ranked team in over 14 years.

St. Bonaventure had lost 24 consecutive games to ranked foes since a 57-56 win over then-No. 20 Temple on Jan. 15, 2000.

Trey Davis led the Minutemen (17-3, 4-2) with a career-high 18 points off the bench. Leading scorer Chaz Williams supplied 11 points and six assists before fouling out late in Massachusetts' second loss in three games.

The Minutemen orchestrated a frenzied rally to thwart upset-minded St. Bonaventure on Jan. 11, erasing a 13-point deficit in the second half of a 73-68 home win.

No such luck Wednesday night.

Massachusetts got within one at 55-54 on a Davis 3-pointer with eight minutes remaining. Andell Cumberbatch then buried a trey to trigger a 9-0 run by the Bonnies.

A three-point play by Cady Lalanne drew the Minutemen within 67-61 with under two minutes to go, but Matthew Wright nailed a three and sank two free throws to push St. Bonaventure's lead to 74-63.

"We took care of the ball better, we rebounded better, and we executed better," St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt said when asked about the difference between the first meeting with the Minutemen.

Jordan Gathers made two free throws to give the Bonnies a 26-25 halftime lead.

St. Bonaventure went on an 11-2 run after UMass' Sampson Carter opened the second half with a dunk.
