St. Joseph's holds on against UMass

Feb 2, 2014 - 3:05 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Halil Kanacevic scored 18 points with six rebounds and five assists to lead Saint Joseph's to a 73-68 win over No. 21 Massachusetts.

Ronald Roberts Jr. deposited 17 points, DeAndre Bembry had 13 points, and Chris Wilson added 12 for the Hawks (15-6, 5-2 A-10), who have won five of their last six games.

Derrick Gordon paced UMass (17-4, 4-3) with 21 points and Chaz Williams finished with 16 points and 10 assists. Cady Lalanne added 12 points in the Minutemen's second straight loss.

St. Joe's took a 41-25 lead into halftime and led by double digits for most of the second half. Following a Kanacevic tip-in, the Hawks led 66-53 and UMass would make its run.

The Minutemen followed with a 14-1 surge to tie the game 67-67 with just under 1 1/2 to play. Williams led the charge with eight points during the sequence.

Langston Galloway split a pair at the line with 56 seconds left to give St. Joe's the lead and Williams had a chance to put UMass up, but he also split a pair of free throws.

On the miss, Raphiael Putney, Trey Davis, and Sampson Carter all missed point- blank layups before Wilson ripped the board down and was immediately fouled buy Davis.

Wilson made both free throws and Kanacevic stole the ball from Gordon on the ensuing UMass possession. Papa Ndao made two free throws to push the lead to 72-68 with 13 seconds left, allowing the Hawks to hold on for the win.

Earlier, the Hawks outscored the Minutemen in the final eight minutes of the first half, 20-10, to take a 41-25 lead into the break.
