Gonzaga downs Portland

Feb 6, 2014 - 7:57 AM Spokane, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - A trio of Bulldogs scored 13 points apiece in No. 23 Gonzaga's 71-66 triumph over Portland from McCarthey Athletic Center.

Kevin Pangos scored seven of his 13 in the final two minutes, while David Stockton and Angel Nunez also notched 13 to help Gonzaga (21-3, 11-1 WCC) exact revenge on a Jan. 9 loss to Portland. Sam Dower added 10 points and Przemek Karnowski had nine boards in the Bulldogs' seventh straight win.

"It was a great win," Gonzaga head coach Mark Few said. "Especially when you have to dig yourself out of a hole in the second half when things aren't going good."

Ryan Nicholas had 15 points and 15 rebounds to pace Portland (13-11, 5-7) in its third defeat in the last four games. Kevin Bailey and Bryce Pressley chipped in 13 and 11, respectively.

Gonzaga got 23 points from its bench and shot 7-of-11 as a unit in the first half. Its lead reached 35-13 on a Stockton triple 5:18 before halftime, but Portland scored six straight late in the period to pull back to 40-23 at the break.

The Pilots came out of the locker room on a mission. They trailed by just nine 2 1/2 minutes into the second half after Alec Wintering's 3-pointer. Two Nicholas free throws at 10:51 cut the deficit to 45-43, and a Bobby Sharp trey at 7:12 tied the score at 51-apiece.

Kevin Bailey made a pair from the charity stripe out of the final media timeout to knot it at 58-all when Stockton stepped up for the hosts. His free throws restored Gonzaga's lead, and a 3-ball at 2:25 made it 63-58.

Thomas van der Mars made a short hook for a three-point margin, but Pangos followed with a 3 to keep Portland at bay.
