Wisconsin tops West Virginia to take Cancun title
Nov 28, 2013 - 5:26 AM Cancun, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Sam Dekker posted 21 points and a game- high 12 rebounds as No. 10 Wisconsin topped West Virginia, 70-63, in the finale of the Cancun Challenge.Ben Brust picked up 16 points and Josh Gasser added 11 for the Badgers (8-0), who took down Saint Louis in the semis.
Eron Harris poured in a game-best 27 points for the Mountaineers (5-2), who bested Old Dominion to reach the final. Juwan Staten had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists in defeat.
Wisconsin led by as many as 12 early on in the second half, but WVU managed to stick around.
Harris made two from the line with four minutes remaining and pulled the Mountaineers within 59-55, but Frank Kaminsky responded on the next possession with a slam, then after Staten missed an easy jumper, Dekker converted a triple to give Wisconsin a 64-55 edge as the clock ticked inside three minutes remaining.
Harris made two more treys around a Decker triple which brought West Virginia to 67-61, but the Badgers made 3-of-4 from the line down the stretch to open up a nine-point edge in the final seconds and ice the victory.
Wisconsin appeared to be in control after a 20-2 burst through the middle portion of the first half turned a one-point deficit into a 30-13 cushion.
Harris then exploded for four shots from long distance as the Mountaineers trimmed their deficit to 39-31 at the break.
Brust and Josh Gasser converted triples around a Devin Williams bucket and the Badgers opened up a 45-33 advantage less than 2 1/2 minutes into the second half.
Remi Dibo hit a pair of triples and Harris was good again from beyond the arc, and closed the Mountaineers' gap to 50-46 just before the midway point of the frame.
Dekker later made two from the line and Wisconsin's advantage stood at 56-49 with 6:38 remaining.
Game Notes
Kaminsky added 10 points and five rebounds with two blocks for Wisconsin ... Traevon Jackson ended up with six points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists for the victors ... West Virginia shot 42.6 percent, and held the Badgers to 40.7 percent efficiency.
