St. Bonaventure stuns VCU on buzzer-beater

Feb 8, 2015 - 1:34 AM Olean, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Posley's layup at the buzzer lifted the St. Bonaventure Bonnies over the 18th-ranked VCU Rams 73-71 on Saturday.

VCU's JeQuan Lewis made two free throws and Jordan Burgess added a layup to even things up at 71-71 with 16.5 seconds to play. But Posley prevented overtime with his layup at the other end.

On Wednesday, Posley also beat the buzzer to give St. Bonaventure a 62-61 win over Davidson.

"I told the guys after the Davidson game I don't know if it could get better, but today it got better," Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt said. "It's always great to beat a team of that caliber in the Reilly Center - we haven't played as well as we could have at home, especially in the last couple of games, but I thought our guys really responded."

Posley made four 3-pointers en route to 15 points for the Bonnies (13-8, 6-4 A-10). Dion Wright had 19 points and eight rebounds.

Terry Larrier ended with 15 points off the bench for the Rams (18-5, 8-2), who have lost two of three. Lewis and Melvin Johnson contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively.

VCU was missing leading scorer and rebounder Treveon Graham (ankle) and Briante Weber, who sustained a season-ending knee injury last weekend.

The Bonnies, who never trailed, led 32-31 at the break and started the second half on a 15-6 run. Jaylen Adams and Posley made consecutive 3-pointers to make it 47-37 with 16:33 to play.

But the Rams responded with a 9-2 spurt to get within 49-46. The visitors kept it close and cut the gap to one, 67-66, on Lewis' 3-pointer with 4:37 left.

The game's next field goal came with 1:56 remaining, when Wright made a layup to give St. Bonaventure a 71-67 edge.
