No. 9 Iowa State crushes Mississippi Valley

Jan 1, 2015 - 4:19 AM Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Naz Long went 7-of-10 from 3-point range in a 24-point effort that highlighted No. 9 Iowa State's 83-33 blowout win over Mississippi Valley State.

Long added five assists in a game the heavily favored Cyclones were never threatened en route to their 500th victory at Hilton Coliseum.

Matt Thomas chipped in 11 points and Jameel McKay had 10 along with six rebounds to help Iowa State (10-1) record its seventh consecutive triumph.

Mississippi Valley State (1-12) shot just 24.1 percent from the field and went 1-of-17 from beyond the arc, with no Delta Devils player finishing with double-figure points. Isaac Williams and Jeffrey Simmons scored six each in defeat.

Up by just three points nearly five minutes in, Iowa State tore off an 18-2 run to open up a 28-9 lead with 7:26 to go in the first half. Long buried a pair of triples during the charge.

"I kind of knew I was going to have it going," Long stated.

The Cyclones kept on rolling from there, stretching the margin to 42-16 late in the period following back-to-back buckets from Bryce Dejean-Jones and Abdel Nader. A 3-pointer by Thomas in the closing stages sent Iowa State into the break owning a commanding 47-18 advantage.

Iowa State put the game completely out of reach midway through the second half, with Thomas and McKay netting four points apiece during a 13-0 spurt that had the Cyclones ahead 74-28 with seven minutes to play.

"We kept our foot on the gas," said Iowa State's Georges Niang. "We put 40 minutes together."
