Texas holds off Long Beach State

Dec 21, 2014 - 5:08 AM Austin, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Javan Felix posted 17 points to lead No. 9 Texas to a 78-68 win over Long Beach State on Saturday.

Jonathan Holmes scored 14 points, Cameron Ridley gave 13 points and six rebounds and Connor Lammert had 10 points and 12 boards for the Longhorns (10-1), who have won their past three. Demarcus Holland had 10 points, seven boards and four assists.

Mike Caffey scored 23 points for the 49ers (5-7), who have lost three straight.

"We got a little lazy on defense," Caffey said. "They started scoring, which was the key to (the) loss."

Texas held a 12-point lead early in the second half, but saw that evaporate with a Branford Jones 3-point play giving the 49ers a 53-50 lead with under 13 minutes to play.

The Longhorns, though, answered with the next 12 points and held a 62-53 advantage after Kendal Yancy put in a pair of free throws with just over nine minutes to play.

Long Beach State never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

The game was close over the first several minutes of the first half until a 13-0 run by Texas. Holmes nailed a 3-pointer to make it 26-13 with 11 minutes to play.

Long Beach state used a 9-0 run later in the half to cut the gap and trailed 42-34 at the break.

Texas shot 52.8 percent from the floor, while Long Beach State made just 38.7 percent of its shots... Texas had a 40-28 rebounding edge ... The Longhorns lead the series 5-3.
