Terps pull away to beat Winthrop

Dec 7, 2014 - 2:53 AM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Layman scored 21 points and Richaud Pack added 16, leading 21st-ranked Maryland to an 82-62 victory over Winthrop on Saturday.

Melo Trimble contributed 16 points with seven assists and five rebounds for the Terrapins (8-1), who trailed early Saturday and pulled away in the second half to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season on Wednesday at former conference rival Virginia.

"We got a lot better today and that's good to see," Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said.

Jared Nickens chipped in 12 points, while Damonte Dodd finished with nine and 10 rebounds in the victory. Maryland shot 47.8 percent and made an efficient 29-of-35 free throws, outscoring Winthrop by 18 at the stripe.

"Credit to (Maryland) for stepping up and knocking (free throws) down," Winthrop head coach Pat Kelsey said. "That's on us, we have to be more disciplined in the defensive end and defend without fouling."

Keon Moore scored 20 points and Keon Johnson added 18 for Winthrop (3-4), which has lost two straight and four of its last five.

Moore drilled a three early in the second half to pull Winthrop even at 35-35, but Layman and Pack combined for the next seven points and Maryland remained in front for good. Layman finished with 18 in the second half.

The Eagles got only as close as five, the last time at 49-44 on a trey by Moore with 12 1/2 minutes remaining. Dion Wiley followed with a shot from beyond the arc for Maryland and the Terrapins took a double-digit lead a few moments later on a layup by Pack.

Nickens followed with a three on the next Maryland possession to extend the cushion to 59-46 with 8:50 to play. Winthrop never got within single digits again.

Moore's layup and a 3-pointer by Johnson gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead before Nickens finally got Maryland on the board 4 1/2 minutes into the contest with a triple. Another Moore three pushed the Winthrop margin to 13-4 before the Terps finally started finding the range.

A Dodd dunk and threes by Nickens and Pack fueled a 12-2 run that gave Maryland a 16-15 lead with just over nine minutes left in the half. It remained tight for the remainder of the half and the Terps went to the break with a 34-29 advantage.
