Haluska, Iowa hold off Michigan State

Jan 5, 2007 - 7:20 AM IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- Adam Haluska helped Steve Alford reach a milestone in his coaching career.

Haluska scored 16 points and Cyrus Tate added 14 as Iowa posted a 62-60 victory over No. 24 Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference opener for both schools.

Tyler Smith added 10 points for the Hawkeyes (9-6, 1-0 Big Ten), who helped Alford achieve his 300th coaching victory.

Alford, who has coached at Iowa since the 2000-01 season, now has 144 wins with the Hawkeyes, which is No. 3 in school history behind Tom Davis (269) and Lute Olson (168).

The Hawkeyes shot 43 percent (20-of-47) from the field against Michigan State, which saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.

Drew Neitzel scored 20 points for the Spartans (13-3, 0-1), who have lost four of their last five at Iowa.

Goran Suton, who had a career-high 27 points on Saturday vs. Loyola of Maryland, scored just four points on 2-of-11 shooting for Michigan State, which shot 42 percent (22-of-52).

Iowa has won 10 straight conference games at home and 26 of its last 27 overall at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Michigan State's 57 points marked its second-lowest total for the season.
