Coastal Carolina tops Winthrop for Big South title

Mar 8, 2015 - 7:04 PM Conway, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - For the second straight year, Coastal Carolina beat Winthrop in the Big South Conference title game.

Warren Gillis had 22 points and six assists as the Chanticleers held off the Eagles by an 81-70 margin on Sunday.

Coastal Carolina defeated Winthrop by a 76-61 score in last year's title game. The Chanticleers got a No. 16 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and lost in the second round to Virginia.

Elijah Wilson added 19 points off the bench Sunday for the Chanticleers (24-9), who claimed their fifth Big South title. Josh Cameron and Badou Diagne tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Keon Johnson ended with 18 points for the Eagles (19-13), who shot just 37.9 percent from the floor. Keon Moore contributed 16 points and seven rebounds and Andre Smith and Xavier Cooks added 14 points apiece, with Cooks also pulling down 12 boards.

The Chanticleers used an 18-6 run at the start of the second half to take control of a game tied at 38-all. Diagne made all three of 3-pointers during the surge to make it 56-44 with 11:58 left.

Winthrop never got closer than nine the rest of the way.

Coastal Carolina started the game on a 13-4 run and led 35-29 late in the first half. But the Eagles ended the period on a 9-3 spurt to tie things up.

The Eagles beat Coastal Carolina by a 75-68 margin on Jan. 28 ... The Chanticleers shot 47.3 percent from the field and went 9-of-22 from beyond the arc ... Tristian Curtis had 14 rebounds for Coastal Carolina.
