Butler holds off Texas

Mar 19, 2015 - 10:54 PM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kellen Dunham hit a late 3-pointer to help Butler hold off Texas 56-48 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

Dunham, who finished with 20 points, came off a screen and nailed a 3 from the right wing to put the Bulldogs up 48-43 with 1:18 remaining. Butler then made 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute as Texas missed a trio of 3-point attempts.

Kameron Woods had nine points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (23-10), the sixth seed from the Midwest Region. They will play No. 3 seed Notre Dame on Saturday.

"I can't say enough about our guys," said Butler coach Chris Holtmann. "This is kind of who they've been all year. We've been able to grind out a lot of wins."

Jonathan Holmes led the 11th-seeded Longhorns (20-14) with 15 points. Isaiah Taylor had 14 points, four assists and three steals.

"Disappointing, but yet we don't ever take getting into this tournament for granted, which I think some people think it's just a given," said Texas coach Rick Barnes. "It's not a given. We'll never be just satisfied just again being in it because we want to win it all."

Texas grabbed a 30-28 lead with a 15-2 run spanning halftime.

Butler, which led by 11 twice in the first half, missed 15 straight field goals before a Dunham jumper tied it at 30 with 13:38 remaining. The basket sparked an 11-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 39-30 lead.

Texas also went into a dry spell shooting the ball, missing 11 consecutive shots from the floor until Taylor hit a layup with 9:32 left.

Roosevelt Jones, who left early in the second half with a left knee injury, returned and converted a left-handed layup to give Butler a 44-37 lead with 4:48 to play.

Taylor then scored six straight points to get Texas within 44-43 with 2:42 remaining.
