Daye leads Gonzaga to blowout win over UC Riverside

Nov 18, 2007 - 4:51 AM SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Freshman Austin Daye scored 16 points and Jeremy Pargo added 13 as No. 14 Gonzaga posted an 84-48 nonconference victory over UC Riverside on Saturday.

Abdullahi Kuso also scored 13 points and Robert Sacre added 12 off the bench for the Bulldogs (3-0), who held their second straight opponent to under 50 points.

Gonzaga, which has won 24 straight games over unranked, non-conference opponents, held Idaho to 43 points on Tuesday - its fewest points allowed since November 29, 2001.

UC Riverside shot 35 percent (20-of-57) and was outrebounded, 33-21.

"We sustained great effort the whole game," Pargo said.

However, the competition will get much tougher when Gonzaga begins play in the Great Alaskan Shootout next Thursday vs. Western Kentucky.

"We'll be playing Top 20 caliber teams up (in Alaska)," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said.

On the offensive end, the 6-10, 190-pound Daye was key, connecting on 4-of-8 from the floor while hitting all seven of his free throws.

"You march Austin out in a game and if the lights are on, he is dialed in," Few said.

Daye leads the team in scoring at 18 points per game.

Sacre also helped out by making all five of his attempts for the Bulldogs, who shot 53 percent (30-of-57) for the game.

Larry Cunningham scored 11 points for the Highlanders (0-4), who have lost four straight games to open a season for the second time in three years.

"As much talent as Gonzaga has, they play well together and play hard," Riverside coach Jim Woolridge said. "Their level of intensity remained high and they broke us."
