Shipp, Love help UCLA crush Arizona State

Feb 1, 2008 - 6:36 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- UCLA continued its dominance of Arizona State in emphatic fashion.

Josh Shipp had 21 points and freshman Kevin Love added 20 and 10 rebounds as the fifth-ranked Bruins cruised to an 84-51 trouncing of the Sun Devils in a Pac-10 Conference rout on Thursday.

Darren Collison chipped in 14 points and nine assists and Russell Westbrook had 10 and seven with four steals for UCLA, which has won seven straight games against Arizona State.

"I was really pleased with the way we played tonight," UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "Arizona State is a very good team, but we were very prepared for them and just played a great game.

The trio of Shipp, Love and Collison combined to shoot 20-of-27 from the floor - including 8-of-11 from the arc - as the Bruins quickly raced out to a big lead and never looked back.

"You look at out stat line - Kevin (Love) had another double-double, Darren (Collison) and Russell (Westbrook) had 16 assists and only one turnover between them," Howland said. "We played exceptionally well."

UCLA (19-2, 7-1 Pac-10) used an early 13-0 spurt to take an 18-4 advantage with 12:22 left in the first half and led by double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Arizona State (14-6, 4-4) missed nine of its first 10 shots and the Bruins continued to pour it on as Love and Collison made back-to-back 3-pointers in a seven-second span, highlighting a 10-0 run that gave UCLA a 44-22 advantage with 1:26 left before the intermission.

"We did so many things right, it was fun to play ball like that," said Love, who had his 12th double-double and fifth straight this season. "We know how to play against the zone now. We don't have to rely on just one person."

Arizona State shot just 32 percent (9-of-28) in the first half, and was outrebounded, 36-20, for the contest.

"Obviously, we got whipped in every facet of the game," Arizona State coach Herb Sendek said. "Tonight was just a learning experience. We have a short turnaround, we have a game on Saturday against (USC). We just have to keep working."

It was more of the same in the second half as the Bruins went on a 12-3 run after the break to take a 58-27 lead with under 15 minutes to play. Collison's two foul shots later in the half gave UCLA its largest lead at 76-40 with 8:27 remaining.

Shipp, who was 5-of-18 in his previous two games combined, tied a season high with five 3-pointers, including three early in the second half.

"I just went back to the drawing board and worked on some things," Shipp said. "I shot a lot before the game and it felt good to start making some shots again."

Derek Glasser had a season-high 13 points to lead the Sun Devils, who have lost four straight after a 4-0 start in the Pac-10.

Arizona State leading scorer James Harden netted just nine points on 2-of-6 shooting. The freshman had averaged 22.1 points in his seven previous conference games.
