Downs, Gonzaga cruises past Idaho

Nov 19, 2008 - 7:05 AM SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Gonzaga's early dominance was far too much for Idaho to overcome.

Micah Downs scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half and Austin Daye added 16 as 11th-ranked Gonzaga cruised to an 80-46 victory over Idaho on Tuesday.

Josh Heytvelt scored 15 points and Steven Gray chipped in 11 for the Bulldogs (2-0), who scored the game's first 17 points and held Idaho without a field goal for the first 8:21 of the contest.

The Vandals later pulled within 10 but the Bulldogs answered with a 16-0 burst to take a 35-9 bulge with 5:29 left in the first half.

Gonzaga remained comfortably in front for the rest of the contest, taking a 47-11 lead at the intermission and the contest was never close over the final 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs shot 47 percent (31-of-66) from the floor, including 10-of-28 from the arc, in what is the team's last home game until December 18. Gonzaga plays in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Florida next week and then plays three straight road games against Indiana, Washington State and Arizona, respectively.

Mac Hopson scored 19 points to lead the Vandals (1-2), who shot 30 percent (14-of-47) from the floor.

Idaho, which was 4-of-21 (19 percent) from the floor in the first half, has lost nine straight meetings with Gonzaga.

Last season's West Coast Conference Player of the Year, Jeremy Pargo had five points, seven rebounds and eight assists for Gonzaga, which held a 47-27 advantage in rebounding.
