Williams and former player Walters duel
Dec 19, 2006 - 4:43 PM Fla Atlantic (4-5) at No. 2 North Carolina (8-1) 7:00 pm ESTCHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Roy Williams used to give Rex Walters advice, but now he must implement a game plan against his former player when second-ranked North Carolina hosts Florida Atlantic on Tuesday.
While Williams was the coach at Kansas, Walters was an impact player in his backcourt from 1991-93. The Jayhawks went 56-12 during those two seasons and reached the Final Four in 1993.
Williams recently became the fastest coach to 500 wins while Walters is in his first season as a head coach.
On Saturday, the Tar Heels routed North Carolina Asheville, 93-62, for their fifth straight win. Brandan Wright scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds and fellow freshman Wayne Ellington added 15 points.
Tyler Hansbrough had 15 points and Reyshawn Terry followed with 13, hitting all three 3-pointers, for UNC, which owned a 48-30 advantage on the boards.
The Owls are coming off a 91-87 win over Troy a week ago as Derrick Simmons scored a career-high 21 points and Carlos Monroe added 20.
Paul Graham III, who is questionable due to an ankle injury, had 16 points for Florida Atlantic, which is 1-8 all-time against ranked teams.
