Hawes, Brockman lead Washington to easy win vs. Weber St.

Dec 23, 2006 - 7:23 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Weber State didn't have a 'Big Baby' but Spencer Hawes and Washington proved up to the task for another big win.

Hawes tied his season high with 23 points and Jon Brockman added 18 and 12 rebounds as No. 17 Washington posted an 80-51 victory over Weber State.

It was the Huskies' 27th straight victory over a non-conference opponent at Bank of America Arena. Included in that total was an impressive 88-72 rout of No. 15 Louisiana State on Wednesday.

Hawes had 23 points in that contest, outplaying Wooden Award candidate Glen 'Big Baby' Davis, who had his 48-game double-figure scoring streak snapped as the Washington defense held him to eight points and nine rebounds. Hawes shot 10-of-16 from the field and hauled in 12 rebounds.

"The first thing someone will mention is did we think we were going to have a letdown from the emotion of the other night," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "Maybe, but sometimes when it's a letdown you don't recover from it. We started out kind of goofy, but after that we settled down and we continued to play good basketball. I'm really happy about that."

Against Weber State, Hawes made 10-of-14 shots from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds for Washington, which will begin Pac-10 Conference play at Southern California on December 28.

"I don't know how many points Jon and I had on the block, a lot," Hawes said. "We have changed a little bit to looking inside some more."

Brockman was 7-of-14 from the floor en route to posting his ninth career double-double for the Huskies (10-1), who are 69-15 all-time vs. the Big Sky conference, including 4-0 this season.

"Jon played his tail off tonight, again," Romar said. "He played so hard and provided so much energy. I think everyone else is following suit."

Dezmon Harris and Dan Henry each scored 13 points for Weber State (7-6), which shot just 35 percent (16-of-46) from the field and was outscored, 42-21, in the second half.

"Our kids came out with confidence, they played," Weber State coach Randy Rahe said. "The bottom line is, we didn't maintain it. Washington is a good basketball team. They picked up some steam, and in the second half obviously they picked up the pressure a little bit more, but our kids played hard."

The Wildcats were also outrebounded, 47-24, and turned the ball over 21 times compared to 11 for the Huskies.

"They are piranhas on the glass," Rahe said. "They are big and strong, and they are athletic. They just kept on coming, and they wore us down on the glass."
