Davidson seeks milestone to brighten tragic season

Dec 29, 2006 - 4:41 PM Lipscomb (8-4) at No. 8 Alabama (11-1) 8:00 pm EST

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (Ticker) -- Jermareo Davidson has a chance to put a bright spot on an otherwise tragic senior season.

Davidson will see if he can reach a career milestone in scoring when eighth-ranked Alabama faces Lipscomb on Friday.

The Crimson Tide's third-leading scorer at 14.5 points per game, Davidson is six points shy of reaching 1,000 for his career.

However, the 6-10 center will play with a heavy heart against the Bisons. He left the team last Saturday so he could travel to Atlanta for the funeral of his brother.

That was just the latest in a number of personal tragedies for Davidson, who was involved in an auto accident last month that killed his girlfriend when their car flipped over on an Atlanta-area interstate. He was going to Atlanta to visit his brother, who was hospitalized after being shot in the head.

With Davidson having to deal with his hardships and point guard Ronald Steele bothered by a sore right knee and sprained left ankle, Alabama (11-1) has remained among the nation's elite thanks to sophomore forwards Alonzo Gee and Richard Hendrix.

Both Southeastern Conference All-Freshman selections last year, Gee leads the team in scoring with 16.7 points and the 6-8 Hendrix has averaged a double-double in his last four games.

Gee continued his scoring binge in the Crimson Tide's last game, collecting a career-high 26 points in a 99-49 rout of Coppin State on Saturday. It was Alabama's fourth straight win.

Lipscomb (8-4) bounced back from a loss in its last game on December 21, pulling out a 66-61 victory at Liberty. It was the first win in five road games for the Bisons this season.

Although this will be the first meeting between the schools, a familiar face to Coleman Coliseum guides Lipscom. Coach Scott Sanderson is the son of Wimp Sanderson, who coached the Crimson Tide from 1981-92.

One of the elder Sanderson's former players is current Alabama coach Mark Gottfried.
