Connecticut looks to remain unbeaten vs. West Virginia

Dec 30, 2006 - 4:21 PM No. 9 Connecticut (11-0) at West Virginia (10-1) 2:00 pm EST

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia (Ticker) -- Connecticut has stayed close to home so far this season. It now will hit the road against its toughest opponent of the campaign.

The ninth-ranked Huskies will look to continue their undefeated start when they face West Virginia on Saturday in the Big East Conference opener for both schools.

Connecticut, which starts three sophomores and two freshmen, is one of the most inexperienced teams in the nation. However, with the help of a schedule that featured 11 straight home contests to start, the Huskies have won big, beating opponents by an average of 28.5 points per game.

Jeff Adrien scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as UConn throttled Coppin State, 84-41, on Wednesday. Freshman Curtis Kelly added 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting for the Huskies, who improved to 122-1 against non-conference teams at home in November and December.

The Mountaineers also have had an easy non-conference schedule, defeating their opponents by an average of 24.1 points per game. West Virginia's lone loss came against Arkansas in the championship game of the Old Spice Classic on November 26.

On Thursday, Frank Young led five players in double figures as West Virginia topped Maryland-Eastern Shore, 95-49.

The Huskies have won six straight meetings against the Mountaineers and own an 11-2 advantage in the all-time series.
