Notre Dame aims to continue splendid start vs. Stony Brook

Dec 30, 2006 - 4:24 PM Stony Brook (5-6) at No. 24 Notre Dame (11-1) 4:00 pm EST

SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) - Looking to continue its home success, Notre Dame is on the verge of one of the best starts in franchise history.

Riding a 10-game winning streak, the 24th-ranked Fighting Irish will host Stony Brook on Saturday.

Notre Dame is on its longest winning streak since reeling off 11 consecutive wins during the 1986-87 season. If the Irish can improve to 10-0 at home, they will match the program's best start, which was when they began 12-1 in the 2002-03 campaign.

On Thursday, Notre Dame put together one of its most complete performances of the season. Rob Kurz scored 23 points and Kyle McAlarney added 21 to lead Irish to a 101-51 triumph over Rider.

The Irish now will face the Seawolves, who are 0-10 against ranked opponents since they began playing at the Division I level in 1999-00.

Mike Popoko had 21 points and seven rebounds, and Ricky Lucas added 18 points and seven rebounds as Stony Brook defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 82-58, in its last game on December 16.

After a three-game losing streak, the Seawolves have won two of their last three contests to improve to 4-2 away from home after going 1-16 on the road last season.
