No. 14 Connecticut looks to bounce back from first loss

Jan 2, 2007 - 3:54 PM South Florida (9-5) at No. 14 Connecticut (11-1) 7:00 pm EST

HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Connecticut's first road game and first Big East Conference contest turned out to be a big disappointment.

The 14th-ranked Huskies look to bounce back from their first loss of the season and extend their school-record home winning streak to 31 games Tuesday when they host South Florida.

Connecticut opened by winning its first 11 games for the second straight season and fifth time in coach Jim Calhoun's 21 campaigns. However, the Huskies' streak ended with Saturday's 81-71 loss at West Virginia.

Doug Wiggins scored a career-high 20 points off the bench, Marcus Johnson added 16 and Jerome Dyson 12 for Connecticut.

The loss left Calhoun with 744 career victories, two shy of Hall of Famer Phog Allen for 12th place in Division I history.

South Florida begins its second campaign of Big East action. After dropping its first 15 conference games in 2005-2006, the Bulls defeated Georgetown in the season finale.

Solomon Bozeman scored a career-high 24 points, Melvin Buckley added 13 and Kentrell Gransberry 12 for South Florida, which won for just the second time in six games with Sunday's 82-47 triumph over Bethune-Cookman.

The Huskies have won all four previous encounters against the Bulls.
