Tennessee goes for ninth straight win in SEC opener
Jan 7, 2007 - 5:19 PM Mississippi St. (9-4) at No. 25 Tennessee (12-2) 4:00 pm ESTKNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Tennessee begins the defense of its Southeastern Conference East crown when it hosts Mississippi State in the conference opener for both teams Sunday.
The Volunteers, who have won their last eight games, have gotten some great performances from Chris Lofton, who is averaging 26.8 points during the winning streak. Overall, the junior guard is scoring 22.3 points on the season.
Lofton poured in 28 points in Tennessee's latest win, a 93-88 victory over East Tennessee on December 30. JaJuan Smith added 23.
Last season, the Vols went 12-4 in conference action en route to winning the SEC East title in the first season under coach Bruce Pearl.
The Bulldogs have lost their last two games, including an 83-75 decision to Missouri on January 2.
Reginald Delk, who is averaging 8.8 points per game, led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Jamont Gordon added 15.
Mississippi has had its problems on the road in the SEC lately, losing its eight. It has also dropped its last three trips here to Knoxville.
