SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) -- West Virginia is off to a terrific start in Big East Conference play and is ready to take its act on the road.

The 21st-ranked Mountaineers look to continue their best start since 1981-1982 on Tuesday when they play their first conference road game of the season at No. 22 Notre Dame.

West Virginia has won eight consecutive games and ranks among the nation's leaders in scoring defense (51.1). The Mountaineers' average victory margin in their 13 wins is 24.7 points.

After topping Connecticut and Villanova in its first two Big East contests, West Virginia posted a 73-46 victory over St. John's on Saturday.

Darris Nichols scored a career-high 20 points, Frank Young added 12 and Joe Alexander 10 for the Mountaineers, who will play their first road game since December 9 at Duquesne.

Notre Dame is undefeated in 11 home contests this season and is attempting to bounce back after the end of a 12-game winning streak with Saturday's 66-48 loss to Georgetown.

Russell Carter scored 12 points and was the lone Fighting Irish player in double figures. Notre Dame made just 4-of-22 shots from the arc.

Notre Dame has won 13 of the past 17 encounters against West Virginia. The Irish have not hosted the Mountaineers since 2003-2004.
