No. 14 Clemson tries to remain undefeated vs. N.C. State

Jan 9, 2007 - 5:10 PM No. 14 Clemson (16-0) at NC State (10-5) 7:00 pm EST

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Losses by Oregon and UCLA late last week has left Clemson in a class by of its own.

The 14th-ranked Tigers try to remain the nation's lone Division-I undefeated team and tie a school record for best start Tuesday when it meets North Carlina State in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.

Clemson became the only major team without a loss after Oregon fell to Southern California on Thursday before defeating UCLA on Saturday. The only time the Tigers opened a campaign with 17 victories was 1986-1987.

After posting their first undefeated record against non-conference foes since 1995-1996, Clemson can post its first five-game road winning streak in 10 seasons.

K.C. Rivers scored 20 points, Cliff Hammonds added 17 and James Mays 16 - including the go-ahead layup with 2.2 seconds remaining - to give the Tigers a 75-74 triumph over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Concluding a five-game homestand, North Carolina State has split its last six contests, including Saturday's 74-58 defeat to Boston College in its ACC opener.

Gavin Grant scored 22 points and Brandon Costner added 18 with 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack, who scored just 19 first-half points.
