No. 22 Connecticut seeks to avoid consecutive defeats

Jan 10, 2007 - 5:54 PM Marquette (13-4) at No. 22 Connecticut (12-2) 7:00 pm EST

HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- After 11 straight victories to open the season, Connecticut has hit a bumpy stretch.

The 22nd-ranked Huskies attempt to extend their home winning streak to a school-record 32 straight games Wednesday when they host Marquette in a Big East Conference battle.

Connecticut has dropped two of its last three contests, with road defeats to West Virginia and Louisiana State sandwiched around a home triumph over South Florida.

The Huskies have won their last 18 games at the Hartford Civic Center and will try to avoid consecutive losses for the first time since February 9-15, 2004 at Notre Dame and Pittsburgh.

Jerome Dyson scored 12 points and was the lone player in double figures for Connecticut, which shot just 31 percent (18-of-57) from the floor in Saturday's 66-49 loss to LSU.

Marquette has followed a four-game winning streak with back-to-back losses against Providence and Syracuse. The Golden Eagles have dropped two straight in conference play for the first time in coach Tom Crean's eight seasons.

Jerel McNeal scored 16 points and Wesley Matthews added 14 for the Golden Eagles in Sunday's 70-58 loss to Syracuse.

Marquette won the only previous encounter against Connecticut, 94-79, on January 3, 2006.
