No 17 Oregon continues best start in 69 years vs. Arizona St

Jan 11, 2007 - 5:32 PM No. 17 Oregon (14-1) at Arizona State (6-9) 10:30 pm EST

TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) - Oregon made a smooth transition from being undefeated to being a giant killer last weekend.

The 17th-ranked Ducks go for their 15th victory in 16 games and try to continue their best start in 69 years when they face Arizona State in a Pac-10 Conference battle Thursday.

Oregon was one of the last three undefeated Division I teams until last Thursday's 84-82 loss at Southern California. Two days later, the Ducks topped the nation's top-ranked team for the third time in school history with a 68-66 win over previously unbeaten UCLA.

Aaron Brooks made 9-of-13 shots and scored 25 points and Maarty Lueken added 18 for Oregon, which beat UCLA despite being outrebounded, 35-22.

The Ducks (14-1, 2-1 Pac-10) can match last season's victory total and move within one triumph of matching the best start in school history. They opened 16-1 in 1937-1938.

Arizona State (6-9, 0-2) has lost five in a row since defeating North Carolina A&T in the opening round of its Holiday Tournament on December 21. Its most recent setback came Saturday, a 64-53 loss to Washington in which it shot less than 35 percent (17-of-49) from the floor.

Oregon has won the last two meetings against Arizona State but has won here just once since 1997.
