Washington State looks to continue hot start vs. California

Jan 11, 2007 - 5:36 PM No. 23 Washington St (14-2) at California (10-5) 10:30 pm EST

BERKELEY, California (Ticker) - With first-year coach Tony Bennett at the controls, Washington State is having its best season in years.

The 22nd-ranked Cougars look for continued success against California in a Pac-10 conference matchup Thursday.

In his first campaign, Bennett has guided Washington State to its first appearance in the rankings since 1983. The Cougars earned their spot in the polls with Saturday's impressive 77-73 overtime victory at then-No.7 Arizona.

Daven Harmeling hit seven 3-pointers en route to a career-high 28 points for the Cougars, who beat Arizona for the first time since January 30, 1986, ending a streak of 20 straight losses on its home floor and 41 of 42 defeats overall.

Bennett's squad was picked to finish last in the conference's preseason poll but has won 14 games for the first time since 1995-96.

The Golden Bears have not played since January 3, when Ayide Ubaka scored a season-high 26 points in a 67-63 win over Stanford. However, California has lost its last three games to ranked opponents, including a 94-85 loss to Arizona on December 28.

Washington State has lost 10 of its last 11 contests with California.
