Strawberry, Maryland look to build off win over Clemson
Jan 16, 2007 - 3:53 PM No. 22 Maryland (15-3) at Virginia (9-6) 8:00 pm ESTCHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) - After picking up their first league win, D.J. Strawberry and Maryland will take their act on the road.
Strawberry and the No. 22 Terrapins will see if they can continue their recent mastery of Virginia in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest Tuesday.
Beginning the ACC portion of its schedule with consecutive losses, Maryland (15-3, 1-2 ACC) captured a big home win Saturday by handing No. 14 Clemson its first loss of the season, 92-87. The Tigers were the last remaining unbeaten team in Division I.
The Terrapins' leading scorer, Strawberry had 14 points and was the team's top playmaker, finishing with six assists against just two turnovers.
Ekene Ibekwe added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Maryland, which improved to 12-1 at home.
The Terrapins hit the road for just the second time this season, dropping their previous contest at ACC foe Boston College, 73-62, on December 10. However, Maryland has won its last three trips to Virginia. Overall, it has captured the last six meetings and nine of 11.
The Cavaliers (9-6, 1-2) have lost three in a row, most recently a 78-73 loss at Boston College on Saturday.
Senior guard R.J. Reynolds scored 21 points, but leading scorer Sean Singletary managed just 12 for Virginia, which was done in by a 23-6 second-half run by Boston College.
Despite the recent slide, the Cavaliers are a very dangerous team, leading the ACC with 8.1 3-pointers per game. Singletary, fourth in the league with an average of 2.47 3-pointers, is one of four Virginia players with at least 23 baskets from the arc.
Maryland has done a great job defending the long-range shot, allowing opponents to connect on just 29 percent.
