North Carolina, Clemson look to rebound from losses

Jan 17, 2007 - 3:12 PM No. 4 North Carolina (15-2) at No. 16 Clemson (17-1) 7:00 pm EST

CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Saturday proved to be a difficult day for both North Carolina and Clemson.

The fourth-ranked Tar Heels and 16th-ranked Tigers both look to bounce back from disappointing losses when they square off in Clemson on Wednesday in an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown.

North Carolina (15-2, 2-1) was ousted from the nation's top ranking after being upset by Virginia Tech, 94-88, on Saturday.

Tyler Hansbrough scored 19 points while freshman Ty Lawson added 16 for the Tar Heels, who had their 12-game winning streak snapped.

North Carolina hopes to get back on track Wednesday when it visits Clemson, which has dropped its last five meetings with the Tar Heels.

While North Carolina was getting shocked in Blacksburg, the Tigers became the last Division I squad to fall from the ranks of the unbeaten Saturday in a 92-87 loss to Maryland.

James Mays scored 22 points while K.C. Rivers added 18 for Clemson (17-1, 3-1), which has not beaten the Tar Heels since January 31, 2004.
