Virginia Tech hopes to continue surprising run

Jan 17, 2007 - 3:31 PM No. 25 Virginia Tech (13-4) at Florida St (12-5) 7:00 pm EST

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Ticker) -- Virginia Tech has defeated two of the Atlantic Coast Conference's most storied programs this season. Now the Hokies are out to prove that it wasn't a fluke.

The 25th-ranked Hokies will travel to the Sunshine State to take on Florida State on Wednesday in an ACC clash.

In a span of eight days, Virginia Tech topped No. 5 Duke and then-No. 1 North Carolina with an exciting 94-88 victory on Saturday. It was the Hokies' first win against a top-ranked team since beating Memphis in 1983.

It also is the first appearance in the rankings for Virginia Tech in 11 years. But more importantly, the win was the third conference victory for the Hokies (13-4, 3-0 ACC), who joined Boston College as the only other undefeated ACC squad.

The Seminoles (12-5, 0-3), on the other hand, are headed in the other direction.

Since posting an upset win over then-No. 4 Florida on December 3, Florida State has struggled and has yet to post a conference win this campaign.

The Seminoles dropped an 88-80 decision at Georgia Tech on Saturday for their third straight defeat.

Virginia Tech won the last matchup between the teams, 72-61, on February 25. The win snapped the Hokies' seven-game skid in the series.
