No. 17 Duke tries to maintain defensive pressure vs. N.C. State

Jan 20, 2007 - 3:08 PM No. 17 Duke (15-3) at NC State (11-6) 3:30 pm EST

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- After a rare two-game skid in conference play, Duke again seems to have its defensive act in order.

The 17th-ranked Blue Devils seek their third consecutive victory and 10th in 12 overall contests when they meet North Carolina State in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.

Duke is allowing an average of 55.2 points this season to rank among the nation's leaders. Coach Mike Krzyzewski's squad has held 13 opponents to less than 56 points, six of whom failed to reach 50.

After losses to Virginia Tech and Georgia tech, the Blue Devils won at Miami before setting a season low for points allowed in Thursday's 62-40 rout of Wake Forest.

Greg Paulus scored 17 points and Josh McRoberts added 11 for Duke, which raised its conference mark to 2-2 by holding the Demon Deacons to 19 points and 29 percent shooting (6-of-21) in the second half.

Although the Wolfpack went 10-3 against non-conference foes, they dropped their first three ACC games before Saturday's 88-74 triumph over Wake Forest.

Gavin Grant scored 24 points, Courtney Fields added a career-high 20 and Brandon Costner 17 for N.C. State, which won its first road game of the season to avoid an 0-4 ACC start for the first time in 10 years.

Duke has won eight of its last 10 road contests against N.C. State.
