No 21 Washington St. hosts cross-state rival Washington

Jan 20, 2007 - 4:27 PM Washington (11-6) at No. 21 Washington St (15-3) 6:00 pm EST

PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) - A tough defense and knack for second-half comebacks have led to a dramatic turnaround for Washington State.

The 21st-ranked Cougars can remain unbeaten at home and win for the fifth time in six games Saturday in their first meeting of the season against intrastate-rival Washington in a Pac-10 Conference contest.

After losing 14 of their final 16 games to finish last season 11-17, Washington State won its first seven games under new coach Tony Bennett and is 4-2 in conference play, one game behind UCLA and Oregon.

The Cougars top the Pac-10 in average points allowed (58.7), rank third nationally in fewest turnovers (10.7), and are 6-1 when trailing after halftime.

Washington State's four-game winning streak ended with last Saturday's 71-68 overtime loss to Stanford. Ivory Clark and Derrick Low scored 16 points each and Kyle Weaver recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Cougars can raise their home record to 8-0 this season against a Washington squad that is winless in five road contests and has dropped five of its last six overall.

Washington is coming off last Saturday's 77-69 overtime loss at California. Spencer Hawes scored 13 points and Justin Dentmon added 12 for the Huskies, who were outrebounded, 47-36.

Washington State swept both meetings last season against Washington.
