Late 3-pointer lifts Duquesne past Iowa, 52-50

Nov 18, 2009 - 5:23 AM IOWA CITY, Iowa(AP) -- Bill Clark's 3-pointer with 11.7 seconds left Tuesday night gave Duquesne a 52-50 victory over Iowa in the CBE Classic.

It was the first victory for the Dukes (2-0) over a Big Ten team since they beat Illinois in 1973, and their first victory in 10 tries in a Big Ten arena.

"Man, that's mind-boggling, to be honest," Clark said about his winning shot. "I didn't even know what to think when I was shooting it. I just had the team on my back, and I felt that I need to take the big shot to try and pull this victory off, make or miss."

Duquesne trailed, 50-49, when Clark fired from the corner. The ball spun around the basket and stuck, giving the 6-foot-5 junior a game-high 20 points.

"I was off-balance, and there were two people coming at me, and it rolled like three times (around the basket)," Clark said. "I got that lucky roll. I was so happy for that."

Iowa, meanwhile, is 0-2 for the first time since the 1970-71 season. The Hawkeyes lost to Texas-San Antonio on Sunday.

Anthony Tucker missed a short shot for Iowa (0-2), but the Hawkeyes scrambled for the loose ball and got a timeout with eight-tenths of a second remaining. B.J. Monteiro blocked Eric May's shot at the buzzer to preserve the victory.

Iowa is 0-2 for the first time since the 1970-71 season. The Hawkeyes lost to Texas-San Antonio at home on Sunday.

"Anytime you can go on the road, especially into a Big Ten venue and come away with a victory, that's a real positive for your program," said Duquesne coach Ron Everhart. "I feel really good about being able to do that. It's very flattering."

The Dukes, whose 1973 win over Illinois came at Madison Square Garden in New York, played without 6-foot-4 sophomore Melquan Bolding, who fractured his right wrist while scoring 25 points in an 85-62 victory over Nicholls State in their season opener last Friday. Only five players scored for Duquesne Tuesday night, but the Dukes had just enough to pull the upset.

"I thought our kids played as good a defensive game as we've played since I've been coaching at Duquesne," said Everhart, now in his fourth year at the Atlantic 10 Conference school.

Iowa has scored just 50 points in each of its losses. The Hawkeyes shot 32 percent from the field (18 of 57) and hit only 22 percent of their 3-pointers (6 of 27). Iowa also shot poorly in a 62-50 loss to Texas-San Antonio on Sunday, hitting just 34 percent from the floor and 19 percent on 3-pointers.

"It's pretty frustrating," said Tucker, who was the only Hawkeye in double figures with 16 points. "I thought we played well enough to win, defensively. But we just have to generate some offense from somewhere."

Iowa trailed by 11 points in the second half, but the Hawkeyes held the Dukes to five points during a 13-minute stretch and pulled back in the game. Matt Gatens gave Iowa its first lead of the second half, 47-46, with a lean-in 3-pointer that beat the shot clock with 2:52 left.

Jason Duty put the Dukes back in front, 49-47, when he swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:35 remaining for his only points of the night. Brennan Cougill, a 6-9, 255-pound freshman, gave the Hawkeyes a 50-49 edge with 41 seconds left when he muscled in a follow shot, was fouled and hit the free throw.

Duquesne called a timeout, setting the stage for Clark's 3-pointer from the corner.

Damian Saunders had 16 points and 16 rebounds for Duquesne before fouling out with 41 seconds to go.
