Power failure suspends Pacific-Northern Arizona

Nov 20, 2009 - 5:08 AM FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.(AP) -- An outage that left 1,300 homes in west Flagstaff without power caused the suspension of the Pacific-Northern Arizona game Thursday night.

Northern Arizona was leading 45-43 with 8:52 remaining and was on a 15-2 run.

The lights suddenly went out in a middle of a possession, causing play to be stopped. After nearly 45 minutes of deliberation, the game was suspended.

"Tonight's game is being suspended due to the power outage," head official Michael Irving said. "It's unsafe to continue playing the game at this point in time. Any decision regarding the future of the game will have to be made by the athletic directors at the participating schools."

Officials briefly considered moving the game to a local high school, but that plan was rejected. The game cannot be made up Friday because Pacific was planning to leave Flagstaff at 5:30 a.m.

An official with Arizona Public Service said crews were responding but that the cause of the outage was not immediately known.

Pacific opened the second half on a 12-3 run and forged a 41-30 lead.

The Lumberjacks responded with their 15-2 run to retake the lead before the power went out. Guards Cameron Jones and Gabe Rogers accounted for all 15 points during the stretch.

The Lumberjacks will travel to California next week and play Wednesday at Santa Clara and Saturday at San Diego State. The possibility exists that Northern Arizona could travel to Pacific after its game against Santa Clara and before the game against the Aztecs. It's 80 miles between the Santa Clara campus and the Pacific campus.

Northern Arizona officials expect a decision this week.

Jones was leading the Lumberjacks with a game-high 17 points, and Rogers had 10.

Pacific was led by Terrell Smith's 11 points.
